Hudson Valley is a broad region of southeastern New York State centered on the Hudson River and extending from the New York City area north toward the Capital Region. The river forms the region’s main geographical feature, flowing between the Catskill Mountains to the west and the Taconic Mountains to the east. Towns and cities including Beacon, Newburgh, Kingston, Hudson, Poughkeepsie, and Rhinebeck occupy the river corridor, while farmland, forests, and smaller communities spread into the surrounding hills. The valley is known for its historic estates, working farms, arts communities, and access to the river and mountain landscapes.

The Hudson Valley has a complex cultural history involving Indigenous peoples, Dutch settlement, agriculture, industry, and transportation along the river. The Lenape, Mohican, and other Indigenous peoples have longstanding connections to the region. Historic sites such as Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site in Newburgh and the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome reflect different aspects of the area’s later development. The Hudson River also influenced the American art tradition through the Hudson River School, whose painters produced detailed landscapes inspired by the valley and surrounding mountains. Historic villages, estates, and preserved farmsteads continue to reflect the region’s varied past.

The valley offers a combination of river scenery, mountain landscapes, forests, and cultivated farmland. Storm King Art Center near Mountainville places large-scale sculpture across an extensive outdoor landscape, while Olana State Historic Site near Hudson preserves the home and designed grounds of Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church. Walkway Over the Hudson connects Poughkeepsie and Highland across the river and provides broad views of the valley. The Catskill and Taconic mountain areas offer hiking opportunities, while numerous parks, preserves, and trails provide access to forests, waterfalls, and riverfront environments.

Food and agriculture are important parts of the Hudson Valley economy and identity. Farms produce apples, vegetables, dairy products, wine grapes, and other crops, while orchards, farm stands, cideries, breweries, and restaurants make use of regional ingredients. The area has also developed a notable craft beverage industry, particularly around cider, wine, and beer. Apple growing is especially associated with the valley, with orchards found throughout the region. The combination of productive farmland, historic river communities, creative industries, and nearby mountains gives the Hudson Valley a distinct character within New York State.
