Bellevue is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Washington, directly across the lake from Seattle and framed by the Cascade Mountains to the east. It combines a dense, modern downtown with residential neighborhoods, wooded parks, wetlands, and waterfront areas. Bellevue has become one of the largest business centers in the Pacific Northwest, with major technology and corporate offices concentrated around its high-rise core. At the same time, places such as Downtown Park, Meydenbauer Bay, and Bellevue Botanical Garden provide green spaces that contrast with the city’s increasingly urban skyline.

Bellevue’s history is rooted in the lands of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Duwamish and other communities with longstanding connections to Lake Washington and the surrounding region. European-American settlement later brought farming, orchards, logging, and transportation links between Seattle and the Eastside. The city’s name is associated with the French phrase for “beautiful view,” reflecting the landscape that early settlers encountered. Bellevue’s rapid growth transformed it from a largely agricultural community into a major metropolitan center, while areas such as the Wilburton and Crossroads neighborhoods retain connections to earlier stages of its development.

The city offers a variety of parks and natural areas despite its dense urban core. Bellevue Botanical Garden features cultivated gardens, wetlands, native plants, and forested trails, while Downtown Park provides open lawns, walking paths, and a large circular waterfall and canal. Meydenbauer Bay Park connects the city with Lake Washington through beaches, walking paths, and waterfront habitats. Mercer Slough Nature Park protects one of the largest remaining freshwater wetlands in the region and contains trails, boardwalks, and opportunities for wildlife observation. The nearby Cascade foothills also provide access to hiking and mountain landscapes.

Bellevue’s food scene reflects the diversity of the Seattle metropolitan area, with restaurants offering East Asian, South Asian, Mediterranean, Latin American, and Pacific Northwest cuisines. The city’s large Asian American community has contributed especially strong Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and other Asian food traditions. Bellevue Square and the surrounding downtown district form a major shopping and dining center, while Crossroads Bellevue offers an international mix of restaurants and small businesses. Another defining feature is the city’s role in the regional technology economy, which has helped shape its modern skyline and brought a highly diverse workforce to the community.
